Unopened (but Emptied) Can of Genuine Russian Lemon-Lime Sprite Circa 2012 – from Novosibirsk, Russia. Three-Sided Can (all three sides shown above and below). Two sides read “Sprite” (in English) with Cyrillic Sub-Titles. One side gives bottling information (in Cyrillic). NOTE: This offering is for ONE collectible can. It is NOT for a six-pack. NOT for a 12 pack. NOT for a truckload. It is for ONE collectible can, as stated. FAQ: Why So Expensive? DETAIL: Having at one time been a frequent traveler to Russia a number of my friends, die-hard Coca-Cola collectors, asked me to bring back hard-to-find cans of Russian Coca-Cola Products. Here’s one of the extras, an unopened (but emptied) 0.33 litre can of Russian Lemon-Lime Sprite, circa 2004. Battling rival Pepsi (and 7up) for the market in Russia, as of 2004 the product costs about 20 roubles in Russia, equivalent to about 65 or 70 cents. But to a Russian bank teller (for example), it is two hours wages. Many collectors ask for empty cans. Unbeknownst to most, soda cans almost always, eventually leak. The acidic contents finally manage to penetrate the interior plastic lining and aluminum shell resulting in a virtually invisible pinhole. Once a can has leaked (and lost all of part of its contents), the normal procedure is to carefully drill two small holes into the bottom of the can so as to remove the remaining contents, being careful not to damage the can. Then draining the can to make sure all of the contents are removed, and carefully rinsing it. The end result is an emptied can which still looks full (as the two tiny holes are underneath the bottom of the can). The can is still sealed, but it is empty of contents. It is cleaned, and ready to ship, albeit carefully packaged as an empty soda can is actually very fragile and susceptible to damage. Again, it is unopened, but empty. We purchased them at a store very similar to a Costco, or Sam’s Club/Wal*Mart. Coca-Cola is not only locked in a fierce battle with Pepsi in Russia, but must also compete against locally produced soda pop which costs only one-third that of Coke or Pepsi. Bottled in Novgorod, Russia (on the Volga), the unopened can is entirely written in Cyrillic characters with the exception of the words “Sprite” and “The Coca-Cola Company. The can is in great condition, no big dents or big scratches, just the normal minor marks of distribution through the retail chain. The can is background colored blue and green highlighted with bubbles and aluminum colored swirls, giving the impression of a lemon-lime splashing into a carbonated liquid – very colorful when contrasted to the normal indigenous offerings on the Russian marketplace. Two of the three “faces” of the can sports the trademarked lemon-lime symbol (half lemon half lime) and the word “Sprite” in the familiar trademarked block print. One the first panel to the left there are three lines of Cyrillic characters which roughly translate to “Completely Transparent: No Dyes – No Preservatives”. The second panel is identical to the first, except that there are two lines of Cyrillic characters beneath the Sprite logo, which translate to “(The) Refreshing Taste of Lemon and Lime”. The third face of the can, the “back” if you will, states at the very top, in Cyrillic, “No Preservatives 0.33L” (liters). The rest of the can is all Cyrillic characters and contains nutritional, bottling information and the contact information for Coca-Cola in Moscow; including snail mail address, email address, and telephone numbers. Russian Coca-Cola cans are much in demand, and given the low numbers of tourists to Russia, are one of the more difficult specimens to collect. This product was bottled in Novosibirsk, the third most populous city in Russia after Moscow and Saint Petersburg, and the most populous city in Asian Russia, with a population of about 1.5 million. We purchased the can thousands of miles away, in Siberia, at the end of a very long and slow distribution chain. Nonetheless, despite the challenges of infrastructure and a product three times more costly than locally produced soda beverages, Pepsi and Coca-Cola slug it out in Siberia just as aggressively as they do in Detroit, Los Angeles, Chicago, or New York. And here’s a great little souvenir of “war” in Russia circa.
